Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, distinguished state representatives, advocates and supporters of this important event.
It is an honour for me to deliver this opening address on behalf of the United Nations Mine Action Team, a coalition of 14 UN agencies. Allow me to join the Secretary-General in thanking the Government of Ireland for hosting this conference. I would also like to express my appreciation to Austria, Costa Rica, Belgium, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Peru and Serbia and to the Holy See for their leadership and hard work throughout the Oslo process and for garnering the support from the many other states here today.

While some relief shipments are getting into Myanmar nearly two weeks after Cyclone Nargis swept through the country, much more needs to be done in terms of ramping up logistical support.

No consensus on chrysotile asbestos, endosulfan
Rome, 31 October 2008 - Over 120 countries party to the Rotterdam Convention agreed to add the pesticide tributyltin to a global trade “watch list”, but were unable to reach consensus on the inclusion of chrysotile asbestos and the pesticide endosulfan during negotiations here this week.

Today, more than one hundred countries gathered to begin negotiations for the adoption of a cluster munitions ban which would prohibit the use, production, transfer and stockpiling of cluster munitions.
